Catechism: What Are We?Sample

Catechism: What Are We?

DAY 1 OF 3

Humans are drawn to the beauty of nature. Most of us dream of climbing mountains, strolling along the beach at sunset and sleeping under the stars. From the smallest wildflower to the most powerful waterfall, creation fills us with a sense of awe and beauty. And that’s just our planet! Our minds can hardly comprehend the size and scope of our galaxy and the universe! When we think about the intricate complexity and vast size of our world and all that surrounds us, we can start to feel small and insignificant in comparison. We might ask ourselves, “Do I really matter in a world this big?”

Scripture tells us that the same God who made the stars breathed life into humans and gives us a place of dignity among creation. As amazing as nature is, none of it comes close to reflecting who God is. Only people were made in the likeness and image of God, and we were given the important task of reflecting God in the world. We have a unique role as mediators between God and the rest of the creation, and God intentionally designed us to fulfill this role.

A glimpse outside should humble us and thrill us. Our lives may feel small in the scope of creation, but each of us is incredibly significant to our creator.

Read Psalm 8:1-9

Reflection Questions

  1. What does this passage of Scripture show us about each person’s purpose and value? How does that cause you to feel about yourself? What about others?

  2. According to society, where do our values and purpose come from? How is this different from what Scripture says?

  3. Focusing on our flaws and insecurities fills us with doubt. Spend some time today in prayer focusing on what God says about you: You are made in His image and given a place of honor among His creation. Allow those truths to fill you with a sense of awe and humility.
