SWHW Bible Reading Plan: August 2021

DAY 18 OF 22

Top Takeaway from Caroline Foster:

I’m going to get a little raw today. My greatest fear isn’t failure. My greatest fear is working for King Jesus and somewhere along the way, getting caught up in making it about me. I know myself. I know my tendency to just start running. I know how good it feels to puff myself up with all the words of affirmation. (Which now that I think about it, that’s probably why God’s been keeping me from getting doses of encouragement lately!)

I believe that conceit or pride in our accomplishments should be like a danger ahead sign to us.

Tyre is described as a city worthy of God’s judgement, and in Ezekiel 28, the ruler of Tyre is called out for viewing himself as a god. Ultimately, the chief sin of Tyre was pride.

Now hear me in this: God isn’t against us finding joy in what we are called to do, but He is against us making any of our work about us. We must never forget that God is the One who accomplishes anything good. We are simply His vessel.

James 4:13-17 says, “Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”  Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”

So how do we fight the tendency to make it all about us?

1. Be in the Word. Before you head into your office, before you pull out your phone or answer that text or email, spend time with Jesus. Fill your mind with the truth of His Word and align your heart with His.

2. Pray. Before you work, while you work, before calls with clients, ask God to give you the ears to hear, eyes to see the need, and words to say. Ask the Lord to keep your eyes on Him.

3. Surround yourself with accountability. Get people in your life who shoot it to you straight and want God’s best for you. Ask them to check in and hold you accountable if they ever see you veering off. The truth may hurt to hear at the moment, but we all need godly accountability.

4. Check yourself daily, weekly, and monthly. Take time to reflect and ask the Lord to search your heart and reveal if any areas of your life and business are out of line with His will.

5. Work with a holy hustle. I love the way Michelle Myers and Somer Phoebus put it, “Work like it depends on you, but know this: it doesn’t.” Show up, give your best, and trust God with the results.

Thank You, Lord, for using me even though I don’t deserve it! I pray over the women reading this devotional and my own life. I pray that You would realign us and help us to stay focused on the mission of making much of You in all that we do. I pray that today we would work from a place that says, “Look at God.” We love You, Jesus!  Thank You for the blessing of getting to be used by You!  Amen.
