Life lessons from Corrie ten Boom - Part 2

DAY 1 OF 7

Jesus is Victor

Romans 8:37 (NIV)

“In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

How on earth can you be victorious when you are betrayed and imprisoned? How is victory even possible when you are beaten, humiliated and sick, starving, and living in the constant insecurity of horrible threats about what the next moment might bring.

In spite of all the horrific things they have to endure for ten months, this Bible verse of Romans 8:37  keeps on coming back into the hearts and minds of Corrie and Betsie. Victory does not lay in avoiding or running away from suffering and misery. Victory lies in the fact that nothing, really “nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:39).

“And this is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him” (I John 4:9).

The words on the tile that hung in their dining room proved to be true: “Jesus is Victor!”

In the midst of all the horrific circumstances, both Corrie and Betsie experience that God loves them. They walk and talk with Him in the deepest darkness of the concentration camp. Comforted by this truth they can share this comfort with many, many women who are imprisoned with them.

Questions

  • Has there been a situation in your life where your suffering was unbearable?

  • Did you, in spite of this, still believe and experience in the midst of your suffering something of God’s love that carried you through the circumstances?

Prayer

Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You are Victor. The circumstances in our life might cause us not to see Your love anymore. But it remains true that nothing, yes nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus. Hallelujah!
