Psalm 11: What Can the Righteous Do? 

When all is mass confusion around us, we can rest in the fact that God is sovereign over all the affairs of men. When it seems that we cannot hide ourselves from trouble (as in verse 2), we can still (and must) put our trust in the Lord. The wonderful thing about home education is it gives us a steady, protected, foundational place to be during these times of uncertainty and ramped-up evil. 

A pivotal verse in this psalm is verse 3: “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Rather than be discouraged that the “foundations are destroyed”—maybe in the form of governmental policies we don’t agree with, or upheaval of all that seems just, or illnesses, or rumors of wars—the righteous can (and must) through it all continue to do what is declared in the very first and last verses of this psalm. Further, we see what God is doing.

What can the righteous do?

• Trust in the Lord (verse 1)


• Remain upright (verse 7)

What God is doing:

• The Lord is reigning on his throne (verse 4)


• His eyes see and they judge (verse 4)


• The Lord sees and tests the righteous (verse 5)


• The Lord sees and judges the wicked (verse 6)


• The Lord loves and beholds those Who are upright (verse 7)

Truly, we can trust Him and His righteousness no matter what is happening in our world. We must share this with our children as they face the future. This is what will give them stability.

To Do with the Kids:

Read Psalm 11 together. Discuss what we are called to do in the first and last verse. Notice that verses 4 and 7 talk about God’s eyes and what He sees. What does He see? Discuss the fact that “to see” not only means to physically see something, but also to acknowledge something, “I see what you did, “I see what you are doing,” or, “I see you.” We feel cared for when we know we are seen. When we obey verses 1 and 7, God sees. Study the human eye together and “behold” the magnificence of your Creator. Draw the eye and its parts and label them. In their best writing, write verse 7 on the drawing. “For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.”
