SWHW Bible Reading Plan: May 2021

DAY 1 OF 21

Top Takeaway From Alonda Tanner:

One of the biggest distractions we face in business and ministry is chasing the “new.” We're always on the lookout for that new idea, new training, newest inspired word, or revelation. New can be good; but when it comes to spiritual maturity, new can also be a stumbling block.

We live in a world that is frantically trying to exchange the truth of the gospel for something new and different. It's tried to redefine absolutes like love and truth. It has blurred the lines regarding what is good. It's challenged every standard of morality; all in an effort to create a new and better life.

Even with all the stride made, there is still discontent because the search for “new” has caused people to abandon what is true. No matter how great their wealth or influence, there is always something missing. That something is the necessity of the gospel.

In Acts Chapter 13, Paul and Barnabas attended a teaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath. After all the prophets and teachers had spoken, the attendees were asked if there were any words of exhortation for the Jews and people in the synagogue to hear. Instead of giving them something new that tickled their ears, Paul responded by sharing the gospel story; taking it all the way back to the days when it was still a prophecy waiting to be fulfilled.

Paul knew that the gospel was the information the people needed to make the most important decision of their lives. That fact is just as true today as it was then. The gospel is still the information we need to accomplish the most important work of our lives.

It's normal to wonder if there's something new we could be doing to better ourselves and our work to expand our influence. If that's where you are, before you go searching for something new to be inspired by, take time to reflect on the foundations of your faith. Let the gospel be your motivation.

The formula for a life well lived or the cure for a broken world is not one that is going to be found in the newest business techniques, inventions, or personal development books. It can only be found in the saving grace of Jesus. Knowing this prompts me to reflect on some question in my own walk with God:

  • How solid is my understanding of the gospel and what Jesus accomplished on the cross?

  • How eager am I to share the love of Jesus with people?

  • Am I taking the opportunities God gives me to love and witness to others?

These are the things we can't lose track of as we go about our work. How is the gospel affecting the way you're living right now? What difference is it making for you and those you're serving?

We know God's love is powerful. Sometimes we need that simple reminder.

Heavenly Father, today we thank You for the gift of the gospel. We don't ever want to be complacent about the love You showed us when You sent Jesus to be our Savior. Help us rightfully respond to that love by clinging to it ourselves and sharing it with others. We know that You hold the answers to all of our hurts, questions, and brokenness. Convict us when we start to wander and look for answers and fulfillment outside of You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
