Trading Mourning for Gladness: How God Brings New Life Despite Our Deepest Losses by Wycliffe Bible TranslatorsSample

Hope Despite Lost Treasures
Steve worked for a world-renowned entertainment company for over 20 years. He had a retirement plan in place but needed another seven years to get there. And then he got laid off unexpectedly.
The company, which had been so solid and dependable for decades, was floundering in the wake of economic shifts. Steve found himself unemployed and doing odd jobs to make ends meet.
His plan was lost, but not his hope.
With the hours he has open in his schedule, Steve volunteers. He’s found fulfillment in investing his talents for Christ’s Kingdom, and although he’s had to make lifestyle adjustments, God is providing for his family’s needs.
Kat had years of seniority with her airline and was easily filling a full flight schedule. Then about 10 years ago, her pension was significantly cut. But because she was still working full time, she felt confident about the future. Then the global pandemic halted air travel and affected her career again, forcing her into an early semiretirement
Kat lost her job security, but not her hope.
With a more flexible schedule, Kat has been able to be an encouragement to those who are overwhelmed and hurting. She gives her time to share Jesus’ love, and doing so has paid back dividends a pension never could.
What have you lost financially?
Jesus came to this earth poor, grew up modestly as a carpenter and then lived through the generosity of others during His full-time ministry. He didn’t have a home or even a bed of his own. Yet He was rich beyond measure.
In Matthew 6, Jesus tells His disciples to store up “treasures in heaven” that can’t be destroyed or taken away. Whether you’re sharing the Good News of Jesus or bringing someone a meal, treasures are created in heaven when you serve for eternal purposes.
And focusing on eternal treasure becomes what makes your heart happy.
Notice that nowhere in the Gospels does it say that Jesus went hungry, aside from when He was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-22; Luke 4:1-13). God provided for Jesus’ basic needs, and He can do the same for you. Whatever things you might lack or lose here on earth don’t compare to the treasures that await you in heaven!
Reflection:
- What are some of your favorite things in life? Have you ever lost them? If not, how would you feel if you did?
- Is there someone you know who needs practical help for basic life necessities? Even the smallest display of generosity can lift a spirit.
