Home Discipleship Restart

DAY 1 OF 7

Home discipleship, whether you are new to the concept or needing a reset, is the priceless faith investment you make daily in your home. The Bible tells us to train up our children in the way they should go. But truthfully, even the most seasoned of us still find it challenging to make the discipleship of our home a reality. Where do we start? What if we miss a day...or five?

For our definition of home discipleship to be on the same page, think about what discipling a home actually means to you. For many, we automatically think of family devotions. While family devotions are a portion of the spiritual formation of our children, that’s not the end of what discipling a home means. Home discipleship is being involved and active in a church family, making God the center of everything we do, and having faith that calls us to more extraordinary things. Home discipleship sets a spiritual trajectory to keep our children running the race of faith long after us.

So, where do we begin? Let’s look back on how God designed the very first home- the garden of Eden. This paradise was not just THE perfect home. Eden was the place where God was. His presence made the first home perfect. God designed Eden, the first home, to be where His children could delight in Him.

More than any tips, tricks, or ten ways to have a more Godly home by breakfast, we have to go back to why our homes exist. God cannot just be the number one priority in our home. He has to be the purpose of everything! Whether we are doing devotions together, doing the dishes, or running to and fro, God is always our home, our reason for it all! Home discipleship is not merely a sacred time to read the Bible and pray together. Home discipleship is being aware of his presence in our family. Home discipleship is making his heart our home.

God designed the first home as a place that Adam and Eve longed to be. The same goes for us. The home is His design to reflect Him and demonstrate his heart’s desire to be with us always. In the same way, our homes should do likewise. Let our hearts reflect this week on how we can nurture our homes to be a haven of delight and rest in God and God alone.
