SWHW Bible Reading Plan - Year 2 January 2021

DAY 4 OF 21

January 6

Top Takeaway from Jessica Hottle:

A lot happens in the short chapter of 1 Kings 13. A man of God goes to King Jeroboam when he is at his altar. The man of God boldly goes into the altar while Jeroboam is worshiping to tell him to turn from idolatry.

When God tells you to go, will the fear of man stop you?

That is the question we are faced with today, just as the man of God was at this moment. Can you imagine walking into a king's altar during his worshipping ceremony to tell him to turn from his wicked ways?

The man of God came to warn Jeroboam of the wrath of God that was about to come upon him. As you can imagine, the king didn’t take it too well. Everything that God said would happen, did happen in a matter of moments. The king's hand withered and the altar split apart.

The same king that God sent wrath on, who had a withered hand, begged the man of God to pray to God for favor. God restored the king. (Yes, the same king who was living in idolatry. Talk about mercy!)

We see how a man in idolatry was restored, even after the wrath came upon him, because the man of God entreated the Lord. After this, an old prophet lied to the man of God and got him to walk in disobedience. The same man of God who went to the altar obeying God disobeyed God shortly after.

None of us are immune to disobedience. Even when we are strong in the Lord, our flesh can become weak. Which is why it matters who you surround yourself with and who you allow to speak into your life. (Including social media. Every post or story you read can become a story you believe whether it's true or not.)

"Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41

Remember, you are never too far from God. Even when you mess up, He is there waiting for you. He cares where your heart is and what it is focusing on. He may send people to help you or He might show you Himself. Either way, it's the goodness of God that leads us to repentance.

Thank You, God, for sending Your Son to redeem us from the curse of the law.  Father, help keep our feet steady and our hearts stable. We are not immune to the things of this world. When we are strong in You and with Your Word in our hearts, we can discern the times, words, and things being done. Help us to see more of You! We love You, Amen!
