Draw Near – 365 Guides to Greater Intimacy with God

DAY 41 OF 365

HUNGER Observers predict that within a few years the most crucial issue will be hunger. Because world demand for food is rising rapidly, our ninety-day stockpile in this country has dwindled to one for twenty-seven days. Scientists predict that one major crop failure would result in the worst famine this world has ever known. Adding to the problem is the unequal distribution of food: the average person in poor countries consumes about four hundred pounds of grain a year; the average North American eats about a ton, at least one hundred pounds of which is in the form of whiskey and beer. James Reston says, "The rich world doesn't really believe in the coming food crisis any more than it believes in the oil crisis. One day we will all be weight watchers." A famine is already spreading in Africa, and the hunger in India has long been known. Famine should not surprise believers since Jesus foresaw it, predicting an increase of "famines, pestilence, and earthquakes" before His return. Our world is desperate. In these troubled times, the believer must not panic and seek shelter from the hurts of humanity. He must go forth to share the Christ Who can solve these problems and guide man through the trying days ahead. Christ is coming soon!
