Draw Near – 365 Guides to Greater Intimacy with God

DAY 299 OF 365

WHY, GOD? During World War II, a lady, reading of the terrible suffering the Nazis brought upon the world, cried, "Why doesn't God kill Hitler?" It was a question many asked during that horrible time when men came to the shocking truth of how evil men can be. Others, seeing the effects of sin on crippled bodies, ask, "Why doesn't God do something?" Questions of "Why doesn't God do something?" must have motivated Christ to tell the simple parable of the tares and wheat. Jesus explained through this parable that if God should crush all the evil in the world, the good would also be lost. Our lives are interwoven with good and evil. The psalmist said: If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? (Psalm 130:3). Is there one who can claim to be all good without even the slightest trace of evil thoughts or desires? No, not one. In the final judgment, God will separate good and evil which will, in itself, make heaven beautiful and hell horrible. But until that time, we must remember that through the LORD's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not (Lamentations 3:22).
