Draw Near – 365 Guides to Greater Intimacy with God

DAY 186 OF 365

CHRIST-CENTEREDNESS The wise learn early that things of this earth do not satisfy. They spare themselves much grief by refraining from the pursuit of material possessions. Many husbands and wives wreck their lives and their marriages by spending their energy and time chasing elusive security. Christ, however, knows we have needs, and He is willing and able to provide (Matthew 6:28-30). Our security is not in bank accounts, homes, or possessions. Jesus says: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you (Matthew 6:33). Therefore, our first hunger is not to be for temporal goods but for spiritual riches through fellowship with Christ. When we get our priorities straight, our lives will be full and we will need nothing. The prophet Haggai pointed out to the Israelites: You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes (Haggai 1:6). He then explained the reason for their poverty: They were neglecting God's purpose for them and had gotten preoccupied in building their own houses rather than God's house. The truly blessed and happy couples trust in the Source of all riches rather than in the riches themselves. Their stewardship and service reflect that attitude.
