TWO IN ONE God looked on His creation of man and saw it was good. Still, something was missing. Man, although created in God's image, did not express all those beautiful characteristics of a tender, loving God. Therefore, God decided to make woman. Man needed a "helpmate." When God completed His work and like a proud father presented her to Adam, the man burst out in poetic exclamation: This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man (Genesis 2:23). Alone, neither man nor woman can express all the qualities of our God. God created male and female, and together they bear the image of God: So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them (Genesis 1:27). It takes both male and female to make humanity. Marriage was ordained to bring man and woman together as a unit, completing God's creation. Jesus lays special stress on this principle: But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate (Mark 10:6-9). In our marriages, we need to properly reflect the character of God.
