NKJV 365 Day Reading Plan

DAY 313 OF 365

Put Away Childishness

The apostle Paul insists that we all need to grow up, “When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things” (1 Cor. 13:11). Paul knew that kids will be kids; they will behave childishly. But he also makes it clear that as we grow, we must set aside childish behavior and become mature.

By nature, children are petty, hurtful, and fault-finding in relationships. They speak rashly, rudely, and selfishly, with little thought of how their words will affect others. Children think life revolves around them. They’re self-centered. They think they are always right and others are always wrong, even when the evidence declares them guilty.

Paul challenges us to lay aside our childishness and finish the process of becoming adults. A part of maturing is the growing conviction that you are just as responsible for your marriage as your spouse is. Everyone on a team is equally responsible for their part in making the team successful. When you win, you all win; when you lose, you all lose.

Marriage has a way of bringing our selfish habits and immature attitudes to the surface of our lives. As we recognize this, we must put away childish things and grow up. Will you step away from childishness and step up toward mature love? As a couple, how can you help each other grow toward maturity today?
