1 Samuel

DAY 20 OF 42

Devotional:

You made it through another week of our study in 1 Samuel! So much has happened in this week's reading, so let's take some time to re-cap!

Saul starts with so much potential as Israel's first king. He begins his reign as king by defeating the Ammonites empowered by the Spirit. While he begins his reign with a humble heart, he quickly begins to seek the approval of men. Samuel reminds the people to depend on the Lord and remember His faithfulness, but instead, Saul becomes prideful. You can track Saul's steady decline in chapters 11-15. First, Saul offers a sacrifice instead of waiting for Samuel because he cares more about what the people think of him. Then, Saul's pride hurts those around him when he gives a foolish order. Finally, in chapter 15, Saul does not fully obey God's commands and is defensive when confronted with his sin. Saul's response to Samuel correcting him is a strong indicator that he is enslaved to his pride. Instead of repentance, he makes excuses and blames others. This section begins with what seems like a bright future for Saul but ends with the kingdom being taken away.

Pride is thinking too highly of yourself and your abilities, and it can easily lead to an obsession with what others think of you. Like Saul, many of us have become enslaved to what others think of us. It starts to drive all of our actions until everything we do is for our glory instead of the glory of the one true God. The idol of self makes for a poor god. It enslaves us instead of providing freedom and control, and it leaves behind a wake of hurt.

Looking back at the Word

  1. How would you contrast Saul's character and relationship with God in chapters 11 vs. 15?

  2. What do you think changed?

Questions to Consider:

  1. If people were to look at your life, how would they describe your character and relationship with the Lord?

  2. In what areas of your life have you become prideful, like Saul? Confess these to the Lord.

  3. Whom could you tell about what you have learned this week? Make a plan to do this.

Let's Pray:

Lord, I confess, that like Saul, I have been prideful in __________. I care more about what others think of me, instead of how You see me. You alone are worthy of all praise and glory. This week, help me to live for Your glory instead of my own.

About this Plan

1 Samuel

Picture this: a nation chosen by God; a prophet from an unlikely background to help show God’s ways to His people; a king whose fear and unfaithfulness bring disaster; and a man after God’s own heart who changed the nati...
