Thinking Like a Boss Through Fear, Disappointment, and Uncertainty

DAY 6 OF 7

This or Something Better

Day Six

Scripture: Jeremiah 29:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:18; James 1:5

When life feels like it’s caving in, I do two simple things to recalibrate my thinking. The first is to replace the word “failure” with “redirection". Rather than telling myself, “I am a failure at business," I replace this thought with, “I am being redirected onto a different path that God sees more fit for me."

See the difference?

God never sees us as failures, but as vessels that are ready to be filled with his wisdom to forge the path we were called to.

The second thing I tell myself when facing disappointment is a little mantra I heard a friend say years ago: “this or something better”. I simply pray, “Lord you know the desires of my heart. You know how badly I want this to work out, but your ways are higher than mine. I am trusting you are preparing me in this season for this OR something better. Show me your ways, God.”

It helps me to meditate on Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"

Can you do yourself a favor and simply pray that prayer right now? I promise you will feel a little lighter than when you started to read this.

When we can surrender and fully put our trust in God to guide us to where we are going, the weight of the world begins to lift. I spent years of my life trying to control my relationships, my business and my appearance only to realize how exhausted I was. I didn’t want to feel tired anymore. I was done with holding on so tightly to outcomes. So I started to slowly surrender, and today, it’s impressive how much disappointment I can take. I hold setbacks loosely, knowing that God is working everything for my good. If these two little mindset shifts have worked for me, I know they will work for you too.

Reflection:

  1. Look back at a past disappointment and identify how God was actually redirecting you onto the path you are on today.

  2. Write this mantra down and recite it when you’re facing disappointment: This or something better.
