Abiding in the Psalms

DAY 32 OF 63

The Best

Emotional. Have you ever had a crush on someone? Sometimes as humans we become so infatuated with someone we would do many things for them we would not dream of doing for anyone else. Poetry in English class? Boring! But when that Mr. or Miss perfect is in your sights and Valentine's Day comes along, we break out the pen and heart-shaped paper. Think about the rush of exhilaration you feel when you think about that crush.

This psalm says that one day in the courts of the Lord is better than 1000 days elsewhere. The whole psalm is littered with emotive language that emphasises the one great reality, greater than anything you can think of: God is better.

Often we think of God as good, but maybe not the best. But the truth is that He is. We often seek out things in life to fill us up with goodness. Sometimes it might be success in your chosen field, getting the approval of your parents or friends, or earning a certain amount of money. These things are good but they pale in comparison to the goodness of God. We are made to be filled up with the goodness of one thing: God.

Questions

1. From reading the Psalm, why do you think God is so much better than anything else?

2. What do you usually try to fill yourself up with?

3. Can you still enjoy good things whilst knowing the reality of God’s goodness?

Pray

Dear God, wow! You are so much better than anything else in this world. Thank you for all the good things that I have, but even more so I thank you that I have access to you, better than all the rest of it! I want to praise you today for…
