The Holy Spirit

DAY 6 OF 8

What does It mean to be filled with the Spirit?

Being filled with the Spirit is an experience of God’s power and life-giving love that moves us to worship and obey.

Do we ever stop and ask: “Why has God given us the Holy Spirit?” And, more specifically, “What is the purpose of spiritual gifts?”

Because you have the Holy Spirit, does that mean you can now perform miracles, speak in tongues, and maybe even heal someone? Perhaps, but perhaps not. Yes! Miracles do still happen, and you may have witnessed a miracle before. But miracles are not the primary reason God fills us with the Spirit.

God fills us with the Holy Spirit to cleanse us of our sins. He also fills us with the Holy Spirit so that we can have a relationship with his Son, Jesus. God also fills us with the Holy Spirit so that we can grow in holiness. And, finally, God fills us with the Holy Spirit so that we can be Jesus’ witnesses in the world.

And being filled with the Holy Spirit is an amazing, life-giving experience. The Spirit fills us with God’s power! And God’s power helps us to grow in our relationship with Jesus, to overcome our sins, and to share the good news of Jesus with the world.

The Holy Spirit also fills us with God’s love. And God’s love moves us not only to love God but to love others. We are filled with the deep desire to worship God. And we are filled with the deep desire to love others.

That’s what the Holy Spirit is all about! His gifts are to strengthen and deepen our relationship with God and to enable us to share his love with the world.

Ask God to fill you more and more with the Holy Spirit so that you will love him and love others more and more each day. Ask him how he wants to display who he is to those around you through the gifts of the spirit.
