We pick up King Saul’s story here, where, after a shown lack of trust and obedience, the Lord has made it clear Saul is unfit to be king and He has found another king after His own heart. Even so, the Lord will not forsake His people and so spares the lives of the Israelites in battle. We again see the conflict between holy living and human agenda arise when King Saul disobeys the Lord’s commands, which Samuel makes clear to him. Enter David into the story, whom Samuel appoints as the next king per the Lord’s instruction. Already, at an early age, David had developed a desire for God and left the promotion to king in the Lord’s hands.
