Trapped By Fear

DAY 4 OF 5

Trusting God

We can unlearn any learned fear by putting our trust in God. The problem is that we struggle to trust in things that don’t make sense. And honestly, God doesn’t always make sense.

For three years, I struggled to get pregnant. Doubt filled my head, and fear filled my heart. I couldn’t feel or see God working. How was I supposed to trust when I didn’t know if He would come through? And what if His idea of “coming through” was different than mine? We’ve all had times when prayers go unanswered, evil wins, and sickness goes unhealed. Confused and frustrated, we end up trusting in our own ability to make things happen.

When hard times hit, we want to trust in God’s ability to change or perfect outcomes. But that’s not what God asks us to put our trust in. Jesus didn’t die on a cross so we could trust in Him to make us happy and pain-free. Jesus died to stop sin from controlling us. He died to align our hearts with His, conform us to His image, and set us free from the bondage of sin. Even though it feels like it, our worldly pain is not the ultimate threat, and it’s not the threat that will destroy us. Satan is. We don’t trust God to change or perfect outcomes. We trust Him to protect our hearts and conform us to His image. We trust in God because He is in control and sees the bigger picture. Trusting God to do what we ask is different from trusting in God. We need to trust in God because He is God, or we will continue living in constant frustration and confusion.

This type of trust only comes through knowing God and His truth. The more His truth controls our hearts, the less fear will control our lives. We walk in faith knowing, no matter how hard the outcome or horrific the situation, God is carrying us. No longer do we stand in wavering fear. We move forward in confidence, even when things make little sense. Are you trusting in your ability or God’s? When fear creeps in, I challenge you to pray this prayer: Jesus, you died so I could be free. Even though things don’t make sense right now, help me believe your truth and trust that you are working things for my good and your glory. Amen.
