Work’s Purpose

Why do we work? What is our purpose? We work to provide for ourselves and our families. We work to better ourselves. We work to keep ourselves busy. We work because we were created to work.

Work has many different forms. We can work as teachers, drivers, doctors, attorneys, secretaries, doing manual labor, and many different things that translate into earning money. But we can also work apart from money. We can be retired people or stay-at-home parents and still work non-stop. 

There is something we must learn to do to achieve the full purpose of our work. We must learn to prioritize and be productive, not reactive. We find value in our work when we prioritize and are productive. Work is best where our needs, skills, gifts, and interests meet. We should be awesome at what we do.

If we work at an office, our purpose is to provide for ourselves and our families, and it is also to be the best at what we do. It is to be witnesses for Jesus. It is to shine a light at our workplace. It is to be an exemplary coworker and employee. Our goal should be to fulfill God’s purpose for us in that place.

If we are retired, our work’s purpose should be to use our time wisely for something good that will make a difference, give back to society, and help others. We should not waste our lives doing the minimum and waiting for life to pass us by; we need to step up higher. We are still able to prioritize and be productive.

If we are stay-at-home parents, our purpose and our goal is to build a strong home, a place of welcome. Our purpose should be to raise our children well, not just shuffle them from one place to another, and from one activity to the next. We should not just run errands all day, but be proactive and prioritize. 

Thought of the Day: As believers in Christ, wherever we find ourselves working, we should remember that we are not working for money, we are working for impact!
