A Lamp for Our Feet

Psalm 119:105

It was dark in the basement den, a dim glow from a distant streetlight barely filtered in through the upper window, casting deep shadows across the room. I headed toward the only lamp in the basement, which stood next to the sofa across the room. Bam! Down I went, not realizing there was a low table hidden in the shadows. I fell hard and ugly. I cut my lip, broke my nose, and thought I might lose my front teeth. I didn’t lose my teeth, but I ended up with stitches in my lip, two black eyes, and a bruise on one leg that took a full year to disappear. If I’d had better light, I wouldn’t have fallen. The light in the distance wasn’t enough to illuminate where to take each step. I needed a lamp for my feet.

Light is necessary to make our way sure. If you’ve ever camped, you know how dark it can be away from city lights. We always bring along a powerful flashlight to light the way at night, shining it just ahead of our feet to keep us from tripping. We also use it to shine ahead on the path as well, to watch for bears or something worse. 

We need light in our spiritual life as well. To avoid taking a bad fall, we need the Word of God every single day to lead us and shine the truth on every situation. We also need His Word to show us the long view, to keep us going in the right direction for our lives, pointing us to the Cross and our eternity with Christ.  

You and I need the truth of God’s Word filling us and guiding our life choices like we need air to breathe and food to eat. Keep reading His Word and let it always be a lamp for your feet and a light on your path (Psalm 119:105, CSB).
