Raising Children Well

Judges 13:5-12

The angel of the Lord appeared to a woman who had been barren for many years, promising her a son and instructing her to raise him as a Nazirite. He proclaimed that the boy should be set apart ”to God from birth” (Judges 13:5, CSB). 

This son would begin to deliver Israel from the oppression of the Philistines. Although the angel of the Lord gave her a few instructions, when she shared the news with her husband, he cried out to God, “Please, Lord, let the man of God you sent come again to us and teach us what we should do for the boy who will be born” (Judges 13:8, CSB).  When the angel of the Lord appeared in answer to his prayer, he asked again, “. . . what will be the boy’s responsibilities and work?” (verse 12, CSB). 

Oh, how it must please the Lord to hear a parent cry out for His instructions to raise a child according to His plan! The Lord will gladly respond to parents today, teaching them how to raise their children. We don’t have all we need within ourselves to raise our children well. We must cry out to God for His instructions. 

Every one of us would do well to seek God for His guidelines and insight for our own life choices. Only God can see to the depths of our soul and know how to guide us to avoid the things that would undo us while encouraging us to step into all that He has ordained for us. Asking for His wisdom isn’t enough. We must then choose to obey Him fully. 

Where are you, friend? Have you asked Him lately for revelation to live your best life in Him? If you are a parent, cry out to God. Lean in close and listen. God wants to give you understanding and direction.
