Practicing The Examen

DAY 4 OF 5

Your emotions give you insight into the unique way God designed you. Psalm 139 says that God knows your thoughts, even before you have formed them into words. By watching your emotions day after day, you can discern where God might be leading you next.

St. Ignatius discovered from his own experience that emotions can give you unique insight into God’s guidance. At 18 years old, his early military aspirations were cut short when an exploding cannonball shattered his leg. As he recovered in a Christian hospital, the young Ignatius spent his time entertaining two fantasies. In one fantasy he was back in service for the king of Spain, winning military victories and impressing the lady he loved. In the other fantasy was a monk, imitating the lives of the saints that he read about in the hospital’s library.

The fantasy of military glory, while it was exciting, always brought about strong feelings of dissatisfaction when it was over. But when Ignatius dreamed of sainthood, he always ended up feeling joy and peace. Ignatius discerned his calling from God by paying attention to these strong emotions.

Your negative emotions can give you insight into anything that’s holding you back from God's intention for you. Wounds from the past, fears about the future, or goals turned into idols can all obscure your thinking.

As you reflect on your day, pay attention to your strong emotions, either positive or negative. Ask yourself what God is trying to show you through these feelings.

Practice the Examen:

1. Tune into God’s presence. God, be with me as I reflect on my day.

2. Review your day. What gave me joy today? What troubled me today?

3. Notice your emotions. What made me feel most strongly?

4. Discern. What are you asking me to notice, God?

5. Look ahead. What guidance do you have for me?

Prayer: God, nothing I think or feel is hidden from you. Help me discern where you are guiding me.

Further Exploration: Read about how God can guide you through your truest desires .
