DAY 6 OF 6

Establishing a lasting legacy takes a willingness to think outside of ourselves and our immediate wants. It means making decisions that will be unpopular at the time but prove to be the path of wisdom. It requires sacrifice, courage, and faith. It is certainly not instantaneous. Therefore it is becoming increasingly irrelevant in our age of cynicism and quick gratification.Caleb’s legacy was profound, so much so that the people of Israel were saved from oppression even after he was gone because of his mentorship of Othniel. Othniel was the first of the Judges, the champions God raised up to deliver the people from oppression.

The book of Judges covers a dark period in Israel’s history where “each man did what was right in his own eyes,” so it took a particularly strong and bold leader to shepherd them through crisis after crisis. Othniel was just such a man, and it’s not a coincidence that he’d been so closely associated with Caleb. At the end of our lives, if they are long, we will realize that a lot of things we did were not important. Any motivational speaker can tell you that. But as followers of Christ we have a chance to build a genuine and lasting legacy that can be carried on by other generations behind us. People will forget our names many years from now, but the impact we have as we advance upon walled cities and do battle with giants is honoring to God, and that is the legacy that matters most: to be remembered as His servants.
