James Through African Eyes

DAY 5 OF 5

From an Africa Study Bible Application Note: Why We Should Ask

Many people quote James 4:2-3, which says, “Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you only want what will give you pleasure.” People often pray self-centered prayers. We are asking amiss. When the prayer is all about us, it is the wrong prayer.

Rather, God wants us to focus on others, the adult and the child, the leader and the follower. Jesus did not ask people to follow him for their own ego but to learn and serve. “Yes, ask me for anything in my name and I will do it” (John 14:14). But he tells us the reason for answering our prayers in the previous verse: “So the Son can bring glory to the Father” (John 14:13). Our prayers should not be about us. They should be about serving others, as Jesus instructed us, to bring glory to the Father.

Reflect or Discuss

Reflecting on your recent prayers, have there been many which are about giving glory to the Father and building his kingdom, or are most self-focused?

Do you find prayer in your family or church only focused on personal needs and requests or do you also pray for the community, nation, and world? Do you pray specifically for those suffering around you and parts of the world where God’s people are enduring great hardship or persecution?

Spend time now praying for God to be glorified in your life, in your church, in your family, in your workplace, or in your community. Give specific examples of how you wish God to be honored.

Congratulations!

As you studied the book of James, you opened your heart to your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ from across Africa. We hope that each day gave you fresh insights as you began to see James Through African Eyes.
