May It Be So

DAY 3 OF 5

We’re making a slightly deeper dive into the prayer Jesus taught his disciples by looking at that prayer as well as some of the ways Jesus himself prayed. Today, we’ll look at two of the movements in that prayer. First, the second line:

Hallowed be your name . . .”

The One to Whom we belong isn’t just anyone. Yes, Jesus is teaching his disciples (and therefore us) to call God “Father,” but God isn’t just a kind, cosmic Parent. God created all things from nothing, holds all things together, and is making right all things that have gone awry. So, as we step into this prayer through the doorway of our daughtership and sonship, we enter a room with a King on his throne.

Which makes the next movement so vital in this prayer:

your kingdom come,

your will be don,

on earth as it is in heaven.

What often leads us to pray is that we have needs and wants we’d like God to attend to. Notice that this prayer Jesus gave us, through the disciples, hasn’t made room for our wants and needs quite yet. Before we get to any of that, we were asked to remember that we’re his children, then we stopped to remember that this God is Holy and Almighty. Now, before we get to a list of our worries and wants, Jesus has us praying that God’s will would be done.
