DAY 2 OF 5

Meditating on God’s Word Daily

Although we need to read the Word of God daily, we should not be doing it to simply put a checkmark in our schedule of another completed task. Our goal is to reflect on what has been read. Psalm 1 says that we are blessed when we delight in God’s Word and meditate on it day and night. There is a commitment to living a blessed life: it is meditating on the Word of God.

But what does it mean to meditate on the Bible? To meditate means that we need to think about what we read throughout the day. We need to “chew” on the information we received from our reading. That means that we think about it over and over again. There are several questions we can ask to help us with biblical meditation. First, we can think of the reason God said something in His Word. Why did He put it there? What was His intention in us knowing it? How can know what God said in a particular Scripture change our life? As we go about our day, we can continue thinking about these questions and what they mean to us.

The truth is that we are constantly thinking. As human beings, we think about many temporal things. However, as believers, we need to develop a discipline of dedicating time to thinking about our soul. Many things that we think about are actually not helpful to us spiritually. For example, the Word of God tells us not to worry or be anxious about anything. Yet, many of us spend a lot of time thinking worrisome thoughts. Instead, the Bible tells us to think of things that are true, admirable, noble, pure, and excellent.

As Christians, we need to set aside time to think about the things of God, eternal things. We need to think of the way the world really is, rather than the way it presents itself to us through social media, television, and music. The world paints a picture of itself. But the Bible has a different image of this world. We need to allow our minds to be shaped by the Scriptures so that our view of the world is through the lens of God’s truth. When we think in this way, we will also be able to apply the Word of God to our daily lives.
