30 Days In The Gospel Of Mark

DAY 21 OF 30

Thought:

Jesus was very wise and many people came to Him with difficult questions. One of the scribes (a religious leader) came to ask Jesus which of the Old Testament commandments was the greatest. Jesus says the greatest commandment is to love God and the second is to love your neighbor as yourself. Doing these two things is more important than any outward ceremony. Jesus wants us to love Him. When we love Him, we will also love our neighbors. Our neighbors are any people we come in contact with, no matter how different they are from us. The love Jesus talked about isn’t just about feelings. It’s also about actions. We love people with our actions when we meet their needs and care for them.

1. What question did the scribe have for Jesus?

2. Which commandments did Jesus say are the greatest?

3. What are these commandments more important than?

4. Why didn’t anyone want to ask Jesus any more questions to test Him after His answer?

Engage:

There are many ways to love our neighbors. You could be a friend to someone who does not have many friends, you could feed someone who is hungry, you could say something encouraging to someone who is hurting. Make a list of 3 ways you can love your neighbors this month. Remember, when Jesus talked about who our neighbors are, He meant more than just the people who are like us or live near us. As you do them, check them off and thank God for the opportunity to be like Him!

Deeper Waters:

Read Exodus 20:1-17. This passage is called “The Ten Commandments” and teaches us how to live. All of these rules are to help us love God and each other.
