         <div class="p"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="JER.36.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">After the king burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah&#8217;s dictation, the word of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> came to Jeremiah: </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="JER.36.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">&#8220;Take another scroll and write on it all the words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned up. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="JER.36.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">Also tell Jehoiakim king of Judah, &#8216;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says: You burned that scroll and said, &#8220;Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land and wipe from it both man and beast?&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="JER.36.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">Therefore this is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on the throne of David; his body will be thrown out and exposed to the heat by day and the frost by night. </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="JER.36.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">I will punish him and his children and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every disaster I pronounced against them, because they have not listened.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="JER.36.31"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="JER.36.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated, Baruch wrote on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">35</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Rekabites</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="JER.35.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> during the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JER.35.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">&#8220;Go to the Rekabite family and invite them to come to one of the side rooms of the house of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and give them wine to drink.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JER.35.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="JER.35.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">So I went to get Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons&#8212;the whole family of the Rekabites. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="JER.35.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">I brought them into the house of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, into the room of the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah the man of God. It was next to the room of the officials, which was over that of Maaseiah son of Shallum the doorkeeper. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JER.35.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Then I set bowls full of wine and some cups before the Rekabites and said to them, &#8220;Drink some wine.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JER.35.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="JER.35.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">But they replied, &#8220;We do not drink wine, because our forefather Jehonadab</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">35:6 </span><span class="ft">Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">Jonadab</span><span class="ft">, a variant of </span><span class="fq">Jehonadab</span><span class="ft">; here and often in this chapter</span></span></span><span class="content"> son of Rekab gave us this command: &#8216;Neither you nor your descendants must ever drink wine. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JER.35.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Also you must never build houses, sow seed or plant vineyards; you must never have any of these things, but must always live in tents. Then you will live a long time in the land where you are nomads.&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="JER.35.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">We have obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab son of Rekab commanded us. Neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters have ever drunk wine </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JER.35.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">or built houses to live in or had vineyards, fields or crops. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.35.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">We have lived in tents and have fully obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab commanded us. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.35.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded this land, we said, &#8216;Come, we must go to Jerusalem to escape the Babylonian</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">35:11 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">Chaldean</span></span></span><span class="content"> and Aramean armies.&#8217; So we have remained in Jerusalem.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.35.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JER.35.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Then the word of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> came to Jeremiah, saying: </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JER.35.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">&#8220;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, &#8216;Will you not learn a lesson and obey my words?&#8217; declares the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JER.35.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">&#8216;Jehonadab son of Rekab ordered his descendants not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather&#8217;s command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed me. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JER.35.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Again and again I sent all my servants the prophets to you. They said, &#8220;Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and reform your actions; do not follow other gods to serve them. Then you will live in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.&#8221; But you have not paid attention or listened to me. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.35.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">The descendants of Jehonadab son of Rekab have carried out the command their forefather gave them, but these people have not obeyed me.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="JER.35.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JER.35.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">&#8220;Therefore this is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: &#8216;Listen! I am going to bring on Judah and on everyone living in Jerusalem every disaster I pronounced against them. I spoke to them, but they did not listen; I called to them, but they did not answer.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JER.35.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JER.35.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Then Jeremiah said to the family of the Rekabites, &#8220;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty, the God of Israel, says: &#8216;You have obeyed the command of your forefather Jehonadab and have followed all his instructions and have done everything he ordered.&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="JER.35.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Therefore this is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty, the God of Israel, says: &#8216;Jehonadab son of Rekab will never fail to have a descendant to serve me.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div>

Take along some of the elders of the people and of the priests </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JER.19.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">and go out to the Valley of Ben Hinnom, near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. There proclaim the words I tell you, </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="JER.19.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">and say, &#8216;Hear the word of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, you kings of Judah and people of Jerusalem. This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Listen! I am going to bring a disaster on this place that will make the ears of everyone who hears of it tingle. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="JER.19.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">For they have forsaken me and made this a place of foreign gods; they have burned incense in it to gods that neither they nor their ancestors nor the kings of Judah ever knew, and they have filled this place with the blood of the innocent. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JER.19.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">They have built the high places of Baal to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal&#8212;something I did not command or mention, nor did it enter my mind. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="JER.19.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">So beware, the days are coming, declares the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, when people will no longer call this place Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="JER.19.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JER.19.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;In this place I will ruin</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">19:7 </span><span class="ft">The Hebrew for </span><span class="fq">ruin </span><span class="ft">sounds like the Hebrew for </span><span class="fq">jar </span><span class="ft">(see verses 1 and 10).</span></span></span><span class="content"> the plans of Judah and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, at the hands of those who want to kill them, and I will give their carcasses as food to the birds and the wild animals. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="JER.19.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">I will devastate this city and make it an object of horror and scorn; all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff because of all its wounds. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JER.19.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another&#8217;s flesh because their enemies will press the siege so hard against them to destroy them.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JER.19.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JER.19.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">&#8220;Then break the jar while those who go with you are watching, </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JER.19.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">and say to them, &#8216;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty says: I will smash this nation and this city just as this potter&#8217;s jar is smashed and cannot be repaired. They will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JER.19.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">This is what I will do to this place and to those who live here, declares the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. I will make this city like Topheth. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JER.19.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">The houses in Jerusalem and those of the kings of Judah will be defiled like this place, Topheth&#8212;all the houses where they burned incense on the roofs to all the starry hosts and poured out drink offerings to other gods.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JER.19.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JER.19.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Jeremiah then returned from Topheth, where the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> had sent him to prophesy, and stood in the court of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s temple and said to all the people, </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JER.19.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">&#8220;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty, the God of Israel, says: &#8216;Listen! I am going to bring on this city and all the villages around it every disaster I pronounced against them, because they were stiff-necked and would not listen to my words.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">20</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jeremiah and Pashhur</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="JER.20.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">When the priest Pashhur son of Immer, the official in charge of the temple of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JER.20.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin at the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s temple. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="JER.20.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">The next day, when Pashhur released him from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, &#8220;The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s name for you is not Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="JER.20.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">For this is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says: &#8216;I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; with your own eyes you will see them fall by the sword of their enemies. I will give all Judah into the hands of the king of Babylon, who will carry them away to Babylon or put them to the sword. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JER.20.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">I will deliver all the wealth of this city into the hands of their enemies&#8212;all its products, all its valuables and all the treasures of the kings of Judah. They will take it away as plunder and carry it off to Babylon. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="JER.20.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house will go into exile to Babylon.
