The Bible Study Reading Plan

DAY 330 OF 365

HEBREWS

AUTHOR:
Nobody really knows who the author of Hebrews is, and, quite frankly, there are several possibilities: Luke, Paul, Barnabas, Apollos, or Priscilla and Aquila. Understanding the content of the book is not based on your view of the authorship so do not get hung up on trying to figure it out.

DATE:
The book of Hebrews was most likely written around AD 64-65. The Temple had yet to be destroyed, and Nero was just beginning his persecution of Christians.

AUDIENCE:

The author of Hebrews directed his attention towards Hebrew believers that were turning their focus back to the religious nature of Judaism.

REASON:

The book of Hebrews was written to show how Jesus and the New Covenant were superior to Judaism and the Law. The author also encouraged the Hebrew believers in their faith journey as they dealt with a new wave of persecution.

THEME:

Jesus is better than Judaism.

KEY VERSE:

"But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises." (8:6 NIV)

SPLIT:

Jesus is Better than Angels (1-2), Jesus is Better than Moses and Joshua (3-4), Jesus is Better than the Aaronic Priesthood (5-7), Jesus is Better than the Old Covenant (8-10), Perseverance is Key (11-12), Conclusion (13)

KEY WORDS:

Better, Covenant, Perfect, Faith
