The Bible Study Reading PlanSample

ROMANS
AUTHOR:
The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul.
DATE:
Romans was written on Paul's third missionary journey around AD 55 to 56. We know that he had not actually been to Rome yet and due to the similarities of 1+2 Corinthians, we can conclude that it was written in that timeframe.
AUDIENCE:
Like I said, Paul was writing to a church that he had never visited before and/or known the leaders in Rome...we can conclude that from the entire chapter he used as a closing statement, to show that he knew the same people they did which would help build credibility with them. There was a ton of tension in the Roman church between Jews and Gentiles at the time, both making claims that they were in charge and things would be done their way. Talk about a mess.
REASON:
Romans was written to help resolve the tension between the Jews and Gentiles in Rome and to show that both groups were equal in God's sight. It was also written to explain the gospel as a whole, in order to be used for ministry advancement.
THEME:
Basics of Christianity and Jew/Gentile relations.
KEY VERSE:
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written; 'The righteous shall live by faith." (1:16-17 ESV)
SPLIT:
Paul's Gospel (1-8), The Gospel and Israel (9-11), Living the Gospel Out (12-16)
KEY WORDS:
Law, Righteous, Grace, Justified, Faith, Gospel
