Nothing Else: Only Jesus

DAY 4 OF 5

Day 4 – Jesus, You Don’t Owe Me Anything

There’s a line in Nothing Else that says, “Jesus, you don’t owe me anything.”

Now, just like we discovered yesterday, the truth is we have a Heavenly Father who loves to bless us. He wants to give us everything. But the truth is also this: He is everything.

Personally, I think it can be easy to sing, hear, and read the words, “Jesus is everything,” almost like a cliché.

But here’s the reality: Jesus died on the cross. He rose on the third day. And because of His finished work, we now have a future that is eternal and a destiny that is heaven.

He doesn’t owe us anything. He has given us salvation and if He didn’t do another thing for us on this side of eternity, He would have every right not to do so. And yet, that’s not His heart.

There are countless blessings we already have in Jesus through salvation. He has already done more than we could ever deserve. But because of His endless love and boundless grace, His desire is to give us everything.

The question is, “Is He your everything?”

This is something God has been showing me a lot about recently, and it all goes back to the posture of our heart. Matthew 6:21 shows us, “For your heart will always pursue what you value as your treasure.” And, later on in that same chapter, Jesus says these words in verses 30-33…

“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.”

The truth is, when the attention and affection of your heart value Jesus above all else, you’ll not only receive everything you need, He will become your everything.

The Lord is my best friend and my shepherd. I always have more than enough. For your goodness and love pursue me all the days of my life. Psalm 23:1,6
