noun (plural): the total amount of measurable space or surface occupied by something; size, extent, magnitude

My husband has been walking around our family room with a tape measure lately. We are thinking of buying a new television for each other for Christmas, and we are stuck on the size. Stuck because we have to fit the new TV into a cabinet that isn’t nearly as big as the screens we are drawn to at the electronics stores.

Deep down, I want to get rid of the cabinet. I want to start over with new furniture and mount the television on the wall. That way, we would not have to keep trying to fit it into a specified opening.

Words like dimensions, measurements, and specified seem to box us in. Yet we rely on them so much. Our brains want to know the limits of things, the exact extensions in all directions and where they stop.

We do this with God’s love too. We create a cabinet of a certain size and keep him in it. We imagine his love being incredibly good and wonderful, but only to a certain point.

His love reaches me until…

His love reaches me, but not if…

His love reaches me, except when…

But these limits? They are ours, not his. Our brains try so hard to understand his unconditional, merciful love, but we just can’t. His love will never fit into the dimensions we are working with.

What if we do get rid of the cabinet? What if we start to reach out and experience the breadth of God’s love? What if we really try what today’s verse encourages us to do—test its length, plumb the depths, rise to the heights? What if we open our hearts to the fullness of life that he has for us, trusting him to love us without measure?

Let’s let his incomprehensible love reach way beyond our specifications.

Invite Him In

Ask God to help you expand your heart and mind. He wants to fill up a much bigger part of you than you’ve imagined with his grace, peace, joy, and hope. He wants you to live in this fullness without being afraid of it coming to an end. Absolutely nothing can keep you outside his love. Let him free you and relax you as he loves you without limits.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you that your love reaches far beyond any earthly dimensions. How exciting that your love is greater than anyone can ever know completely! I desperately want to be filled beyond my limited understanding with all the fullness of you.
