This week we want to challenge you to pursue God with everything you have, in every area of your life. We want you to understand who you really are as a follower of Jesus – what your real identity is once you’ve given your life to Him.
Identity is defined as “who a person or thing is”. So no matter if you’re a person or a thing you have an identity. Pretty cool, right? While having an identity is common, YOUR identity is anything but ordinary. It’s what makes you who you are; it's what makes you unique. This can be hard to understand because many of us are still learning who we are each day.
I recently began researching my family history, and it was amazing to read about some of the stories from my family’s past. Using a DNA testing company, I was able to find out details about what my family members did, when they came to America and from where, and even found some old Civil War era pictures from some of the people on my family tree. I know you may think that’s weird or boring, but I thought it was pretty crazy!
But my family tree isn’t your family tree. You may have parents and grandparents who are similar to mine, but our stories are completely unique. None of us come from exactly the same place, exactly the same circumstances, even when we share common relatives or ancestors. You are uniquely you. No one, no matter how hard they try, can be who you are and do what God has gifted and called you to do.
People may call us by our traits. They may say we’re funny, strange, or compliment us for the things we are good at, but those traits don’t define who we are. God chooses our identity. He is the only one who REALLY tells us who we are.
You were made in the image of God. This is who you are to your very core. No matter what you like about yourself or don’t like about yourself, your identity is in God. He values you, and wants to use you to do some amazing things in the world.
Think about this today: What are some things you are uniquely good at or passionate about? Those may be things God wants you to use to be an influence for Him!
