Prayers of Faith
Reading: Mark 9:14-29
Key Verse: “The father instantly replied, ‘I do believe, but help me not to doubt’” verse 24
Faith is an important element of prayer because it activates the supernatural power of God to become a reality here on earth. In Matt.21:18-22 when Jesus cursed the fig tree He stressed the necessity of faith in prayer. In this instance prayer was having faith in God that when we speak with God’s authority to a mountain, God will cause it to be removed (see also the parallel passage in Mark 11:20-25).
We have many testimonies of people who have prayed in this way and seen their threatening “mountains” of sickness, unemployment, estrangement and bankruptcy removed. God has answered the faith filled prayers of His people with His blessing and provision.
But what if you are not filled with faith? Is there no chance if we are not totally convinced of God’s intervention? Today’s reading gives us cause to hope. Although the father confessed faith he also acknowledged doubt yet Jesus still responded to his prayer for healing. In the parallel passage in Matt.17:14-21 Jesus explained that even a little faith was sufficient. Prayer itself indicates a belief in God.
We do not need great faith in God to move mountains – only a little mustard seed of faith in a great God!
Prayer: Lord I do believe, help me not to doubt
