Sweeter Than Honey

DAY 6 OF 7

Remember the Rainbow (Sherbet)

I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. —Genesis 9:13

Rainbow sherbet’s vibrant colors and bright flavors bring instant delight. It also recalls God’s rainbow promise. In Genesis 6-8, God saves Noah and his family from a worldwide flood. When it’s over, He makes a covenant with Noah to never again destroy the world with a flood. The reminder of His promise kept is the rainbow we all enjoy after the rain.

How many times have you said, “I promise,” and not followed through? A broken promise damages trust, which takes a long time to earn and a moment to lose. Thankfully, God forgives and restores us each time we fail to do what we promise. Even better, God keeps His own promises. And in His Word, there are a lot of them!

God’s promise to Noah wasn’t the first for mankind.

When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, they condemned all of us to eternal separation from God. But our loving Father made a crucial pledge, hidden in His curse of the instigating serpent, that He would make a way to restore us to Himself: “And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike[b] your head, and you will strike his heel” (Gen. 3:15, NLT).

God was promising that the serpent (Satan) would receive a head-crushing death blow (he will be defeated forever) and Jesus would receive just a “snakebite” (His death on the cross resulted in resurrection and victory). God promised a Savior, who did come. And He’s promising eternal life for you, which started with Jesus.

Start searching through the Word to find God’s promises for all kinds of situations in your life. He will fight for you (Ex. 14:14). He will give you strength (Is. 40:29). He will give you wisdom (Jas. 1:5). These are just a few of the promises you’ll find.

A study of God’s promises is a delightful Bible treasure hunt. Write them down as you discover them and they’ll leave a sweet taste each time you recall them.

 Points to Ponder:

  • Think about a time you broke a promise and the fallout from that event.
  • What could you say instead of making a promise you might not be able to keep? See James 4:15.
  • What are you struggling with? Look up a promise from God that will help you through it.
