FCA: Strong Devotional

DAY 18 OF 33

Keep on Track

Imran Tariq

Ready:

“We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.” Hebrews 12:2

Set:

Darren Sammy, captain of the West Indian two-time T20 Cricket World Cup champion team, gave a highly politicized interview on the podium in 2016, prior to accepting the trophy. He thanked his teammates and supporters, yet criticized the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). He vented months, possibly years, of frustration. In a reference to the lengthy and bitter pay dispute that had put their World Twenty20 participation in doubt, the captain said his team felt “disrespected by our board. People were wondering whether we would play this tournament. We had a lot of issues. I’m yet to hear from [them]. That is very disappointing.”

That emotional speech closed the doors of international cricket for Sammy. It happens often—in anger or anxiety we don’t stay on track and speak irrelevantly. That irrelevancy leads to wrong decisions, and we have to pay a small or big cost. While entangled in a situation, remember that what happens is 10% of the situation; our reaction is 90%.

Get your mind off your circumstances and problems and focus on God’s goodness to you in the past, His closeness in the present, and His power to help you in your future. If you find yourself at a point where you’ve lost hope, turn your thoughts to the Lord and focus on Him.

Go:

1. While in a sports arena, what things distract you?

2. How do you spiritually keep on track?

3. What do you do when you are off track?

4. Share some off-track moments when you felt God’s hand on your life.

5. Who do you blame for being off track?

Overtime:

God, help me to stay focused in all areas of life so that I can be Your effective witness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
