Jesus, Compassion And Justice

DAY 14 OF 14

Rediscovering Calling

As we come to end of our brief journey together, you may be considering what all this means for you and your family.

When a friend asked me whether his lack of interest in the poor made him a bad Christian, I asked him what he was passionate about. “I am a nurse. I am passionate about helping sick people,” he said.

“Then you have found your vocation. Serve Jesus with all your heart in the hospital.”

Another friend asked if the call she felt to minister to university students from affluent backgrounds was valid.

“Of course. Who will love them if you don’t? Teach them to establish the subversive upside- down kingdom of Jesus. Those young people need to know God’s heart for the poor as much as anyone because they will be the nation’s leaders.”

The Bible tells us that Abraham practiced hospitality and God was with him. We also hear that Elijah loved to pray and God was with him. And we read about how David ruled a kingdom and God was with him too.

If you are seeking the work God has made you to do, search for the deepest inclination of your heart and follow it to where it meets the suffering of the world.*

Or in the words of Mother Teresa, “Find your own Calcutta.” If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed the one God places in front of you. You must resist the temptation to do nothing because you can do only a little or because you can’t be like someone else who seems more radical. It takes many tiny candles to overcome the darkness.

Your work now is to discern how God has uniquely wired you to follow Jesus, our subversive Savior, and build his upside-down kingdom in the ruins of a crumbling empire—and to keep following him all the way to the cross.
