Chapter 32
Job’s first stop: This is God’s camp – Mahanaim (two camps)
Messengers to Esau – I want to find favor in your sight
Messengers return: he’s coming with 400 men
Jacob prays – please deliver me; cites God’s call & promises
Jacob prepares a present for Esau
Jacob wrestles with God
I will not let go unless you bless me
New name: Israel – He strives with God
Names the place Peniel – Face of God
Peniel / Penuel – same Hebrew word
Chapter 33
Jacob meets Esau
Shows extreme deference
Offers profound gifts
Esau calls him “brother”
Esau invites Jacob to Seir, but Jacob goes the other way to Succoth
Jacob buys land in the land of Shechem
Chapter 34
Shechem rapes Dinah and falls in love with her
Tells father “Get me this girl for my wife”
Hamor, Shechem’s father seeks out Dinah as wife, and a full marriage treaty between them
Shechem – “Whatever you say to me I will give”
Jacob’s sons deceive – become circumcised like us – all of you – AND THEY AGREE!!!
Hamor and Shechem convince their men to do this without delay
Hamor: “Will not their livestock, their property and their beasts be ours?”
“When they were sore” – overcome by 2 of Dinah’s brothers
Jacob’s sons plundered Shechem’s city
Jacob – you have made me stink. Sons – should he treat our sister like a prostitute?
Chapter 35
God calls Jacob to Bethel
Jacob purifies his household, putting away all of the foreign gods
While traveling a terror of them fell on all of the cities around
Jacob arrives at Bethel and builds an altar – El-bethel – God of Bethel
The first of Jacob’s wives/concubines (Deborah, Rachel’s nurse) dies
God meets with Jacob
New name – Israel
Command – be fruitful and multiply
Promise – A nation and a company of nations shall come from you;
Promise - kings from your own body
Promise – Land that I gave Abraham and Isaac I will give you and offspring
Jacob sets a pillar and pours out a drink offering
Rachel gives birth to Ben-oni – son of my sorrow
Jacob call him Benjamin – son of the right hand
Rachel dies
Reuben takes Israel’s concubine, Bilhah
Jacob comes to Isaac at Mamre
Isaac dies
Jacob and Esau bury Isaac
