Genesis 12-23 – Abraham

Chapter 12
God calls Abraham into Caanan
Famine – into Egypt
Wife / Sister
Chapter 13
Back to Caanan – the Negeb
Conflict: Land could not support both Abram & Lot
Abram & Lot separate; Abram gives Lot first choice
Promise: All the land you see I will give you forever
Promise: I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth
Chapter 14
4 kings versus 5 – Sodom & Gomorrah are taken
Lot captured
Abram rescues Lot with 318 defeating 4 kings (after they had defeated 5)
Melchizedek – king of Salem
Melchizedek blesses Abram
Abram gives Melchizedek 10% of everything
Abram takes no spoil, but gives it to his allies
Chapter 15
God promises Abram offspring as numerous as the stars. Abram believes him.
I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.
Abram: How am I to know
God: bring me a sacrifice
Deep sleep / Dreadful darkness / God tells of sojourning, returning with great possessions in the fourth generation
Smoking fire pot / flaming torch between the pieces of the sacrifice
God: To your offspring I give this land
Chapter 16
Sarai’s idea: I shall obtain children by my servant.
It backfires – contempt; conflict with Abram; Hagar runs away
Angel finds Hagar; tells her to return and submit to Sarai
Angel gives Hagar a promise: I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude
Prophecy given about Ishmael
Ishmael is born
Chapter 17
13 years later God appears again
Promise: you shall be the father of a multitude of nations
New name: Abraham – for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.
Promises: fruitful; nations; kings; everlasting covenant; everlasting possession
Instructions: keep my covenant (circumcision)
Sarai gets a new name: Sarah
I will bless her
I will give you a son by her
Abraham: Oh that Ishmael might live before you
God: No. Sarah will have a son. Call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him.
I have blessed Ishmael. I will make him fruitful and into a great nation. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac.
Abraham circumcises all the men of his household.
Chapter 18
Abraham is visited by the Lord
Sarah will bear a child around this time next year
Sarah: who me? I didn’t laugh.
The Lord: I’m going to check out the outcry against Sodom. If it’s true, I’ll know.
Abraham negotiates for Sodom: 50; 45; 40; 30; 20; 10
Chapter 19
Lot protects the 2 angels – offers to give up his 2 daughters
Angels give warning to leave; sons-in-law think they’re joking
Lot, 2 daughters and wife escape to Zoar – a little city
God destroys Sodom and Gomorrah and all the valley
Lot’s wife looks back - and becomes a pillar of salt
God remembered Abraham and set Lot out of the midst of the overthrow
Lot’s daughters conspire to get pregnant by their father
2 sons/grandsons: Moab & Ben-ammi – fathers of the Moabites and Ammonites
Chapter 20
Abraham told people Sarah was his sister
Abimelech takes Sarah – you are a dead man
Abraham “I did it because I thought, There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife”.
Abimelech returns Sarah, along with sheep, oxen and servants
Chapter 21
Isaac is born
Sarah: “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me. Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
Hagar & Ishmael are sent away
God rescues Hagar & Ishmael
Hagar gets Ishmael an Egyptian wife
Abraham & Abimelech make a treaty at Beersheba
Chapter 22
God demands the sacrifice of Isaac
Abraham obeys the demand
God stops the sacrifice and rescues Isaac
