“What should we say then? Is the law sin?”
Romans 7:7a
“So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.” Romans 7:12
The problem was never the Law!
“But I would not have known sin if it were not for the law” Romans 7:7b
For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “Do not covet.”
Romans 7:7c
Covet—a craving for something so strong that it begins to control you
Coveting proves sin lives inside of me
“Evil is present within me"
Romans 7:21
And sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind. For apart from the law sin is dead. Once I was alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life again and I died. The commandment that was meant for life resulted in death for me. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.
Romans 7:8-11
v. 11 “sin seized an opportunity through the commandment…”
v. 13 “sin (became) sinful beyond measure”
When the Law exposes what is wrong, sin hijacks the command and puts up a vicious fight.
“I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life again and I died. The commandment that was meant for life resulted in death for me.
Romans 7:9-10
"When a man is getting better he understands more and more clearly the evil that is still left in him.”
C.S. Lewis
The Law exposes us
“I just want to look in somebody’s eyes and have them be pleased with me.”
Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. Gal 3:24
