MAIN POINT:
Sometimes Scripture’s Mundane Narratives include MAJOR THEMES in God’s Missional Story.
What may feel like a PAUSE in LIFE is actually a PLOT in MISSION.
Sometimes Scripture’s Mundane Narratives include MAJOR THEMES in God’s Missional Story.
What may feel like a PAUSE in LIFE is actually a PLOT in MISSION.
MISSIONAL THEME #1:
Death Reminds us why God’s mission is necessary.
Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her. (Genesis 23:1–2)

MISSIONAL THEME #2:
God is at work even when we can’t see it.
Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor: Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.” Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. (Genesis 22:20–23)

MISSIONAL THEME #3:
God works in and over cultural practices to advance His missional purpose.
He said, “I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.”The Hittites replied to Abraham, “Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead.” (v. 4–6)

Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites. He said to them, “If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.”

MISSIONAL THEME #4:
God’s promises are free, but experiencing them is costly.
“No, my lord,” he said. “Listen to me; I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.” Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land and he said to Ephron in their hearing, “Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.“ (v. 12–16)

Ephron answered Abraham, “Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.”
Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.

MISSIONAL THEME #5:
The Tomb plants the seed for the future triumph and throne.
So Ephron’s field in Machpelah near Mamre—both the field and the cave in it—was deeded to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city. Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan.(v. 17–19)

MISSIONAL THEME #6:
Death is the doorway to experience God’s promise.

DEATH IS THE DOORWAY TO LIFE (MATT 16:24-25)
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

DEATH IS THE DOORWAY TO LIFE (ROMANS 6:3-4,8)
Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. . . .Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

DEATH IS THE DOORWAY TO LIFE (PHIL 1:21-23)
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;

MISSIONAL THEME #7:
God’s promise is already secured, but not yet fully realized.

PROMISE SECURED, NOT FULLY REALIZED (EPH 1:13-14)
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a depositguaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption
of those who are God’s possession—
to the praise of his glory.
