Let's take some time today to remember the story of Jesus’ sacrifice as this glorious narrative that is woven through the scriptures.

Remember that Jesus was of Jewish ethnicity. His lineage is traced through the line of Judah, through the royal line of King David. This lineage of the Messiah coming through the line of Judah and King David, was prophesied as far back as Genesis 49, through Jacob’s blessing of his sons.

So, we know Jesus was extremely well versed and educated in the Hebrew Scriptures. He knew very well the prophecies that were passed on from the ancient texts and when and how they would be fulfilled.

Let’s look at a few, specifically in regards to the Messiah.
We see this fulfilled in Matthew 1:21-23
The anticipation of the Messiah is deeply rooted in the Hebrew Scriptures.
During Jesus’ ministry through Galilee and Judea, He speaks many times of His predicted betrayal, denial, arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection.
This is not what His disciples wanted to hear, and at one point in Matthew 16, it says Peter rebukes Jesus for saying these things, replying “Lord, this will never happen to You” and Jesus responds with “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”

Jesus death on the cross was not an accident.
So, the last week of Jesus’ life, what we know as the Holy Week, he enters Jerusalem, where he is betrayed and denied by some of his disciples, then gets into conflict with the religious leaders, and gets arrested.

He’s put on trial as someone claiming to be the King of Jews.

He’s given a robe and the crown of thorns as a cruel joke of this outrageous claim. He’s then mocked, beaten, and eventually hung up on the cross. Where he later draws his last breath, with “It is finished”.
and in Luke 23, it says, there was darkness over the whole land.

So, His crucifixion, His death on the cross…What did it do for us? Gave us redemption, yes we hear this word all the time. Lets look something else.

Atonement and Purification
However, even though his earthly life was finished, the story is not. Jesus’ death was not final.

On the third day, He is raised from the dead. We are now able to see what His sacrifice has done for us.

He was the sacrifice who broke the power of death and evil. By His resurrection, Jesus conquers the grave, He overcomes death, offering eternal life to all who believe.

Yet there’s more to the story, even still.

After His resurrection, Jesus appears to His disciples in Luke 24...
Jesus then clearly guides them to spread the Good News.

He gives the Great Commission.
How do we make disciples, as Jesus instructs? Spread the Good News.

At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, he shared this about the gospel, the good news...
This pretty much sums up Jesus’ preaching ministry, the Gospel, the Good News, that the Kingdom of God is at hand. God’s rule over our hearts and lives is now established.

The same power that brought Jesus back from the dead is the same power that can deal with the sin and evil in our own lives and transform us. We have access to that Great power through Jesus. This is good news
