Setting the Table - WEEK 2

Setting the Table - WEEK 2

When Jesus fed the hungry, welcomed the outcast, and touched the untouchable, he wasn’t just being kind — he was showing us how love lives. In a season when our tables are already set with food and family, what if we set one more seat for grace? Hospitality isn’t about impressing guests. It’s about making room. Room for interruptions. Room for outsiders. Room for the kind of love that listens, lingers, and doesn’t always agree — but always welcomes.

“Grace is not only a disposition or a quality or an inclination in the nature of God, but is an influence or a force or a power or an acting of God that works in us to change our capacities for work and suffering and obedience.” - John Piper
ALLOW GOD’S GRACE TO TRANSFORM THOSE ON THE MARGINS.
“It is vital to see what healing and salvation mean when they come from the hand of God. It is vital to have the eyes to see what Jesus did. It is also vital to have the eyes to see what Jesus did not do. He did not tell the leper that God approved of him just as he was. Nor did Jesus rebuke the faith community for upholding irrational taboos against leprosy. The problem was the contagion and the contagion was dangerous…when Jesus walked the earth, he wasn’t afraid to touch hurting people. He drew them in close. He met them empty and left them full. He turned everything upside down.” - Rosaria Butterfield, The Gospel Comes with a House Key
ALLOW GOD’S GRACE TO TRANSFORM GOD’S FAMILY.
“While church is not less than Sunday services, it is far more. It must be more to survive the Western spiritual apocalypse. Church must become a thick web of interdependent relationships between resilient disciples of Jesus, deeply devoted to the Way of Jesus. Whether your church is Anabaptist or Anglican; urban, suburban, or rural; a megachurch or a house church; in a theater, cathedral, or living room—we must move beyond Sunday services and a network of loose ties to become a robust counter-anti-culture not just against the world but for the world. Because we’re not just against evil; we’re for good. We’re for love, joy, thriving marriages and families, children brought up in loving delight, adults moving off the egocentric operating system to become people of love, true freedom, justice for all, and unity in diversity.” - John Mark Comer, Live No Lies
ALLOW GOD’S GRACE TO TRANSFORM YOU.
“Radically ordinary Christian hospitality must be rooted and seeped in grace: church membership, private prayer and fasting, solitude, repentance, Bible reading, Scripture memory, and worshipful singing” - Rosaria Butterfield, The Gospel Comes with a House Key
SERMON IN A SENTENCE
Grace flows through us when we live under God and open our tables to those around us.
