Introduction
In the midst of judgment upon the nations, what is God’s ultimate purpose?

Is. 19:16-25 tells us this ultimate purpose: the repentance of the nations unto salvation and worship of the LORD.
“In that day…” refers to they day of the Lord, primarily in the future, usually in an end-times capacity. Here, it also connects to the judgment upon Egypt found in Is. 19:1-15.

“The Egyptians will be like women, and tremble with fear before the hand that the LORD of hosts shakes over them…”
o This is not putting down women or saying women are more scared or fearful then men.
o In ancient times (and arguably so today), there is a certain particular fear when a woman suddenly finds herself alone or accosted by a man and realizes she is defenseless. In the same way, the Egyptians find themselves under the judgment of God and realize they are defenseless – hence the trembling fear.
o The land of Judah becomes a terror to Egypt because God is great – not Judah.

Five Cities swearing allegiance to the LORD and taking the same language seems to be symbolic for a remnant within Egypt; may also be the symbol for all of Egypt or five literal cities (think Jer. 44:1 – four literal cities where Jews dwelled in Egypt).

The worship of the LORD will be public, represented by the altar and pillar.

The Lord sends a savior against oppressors, using language of the people of God (recalling Judges, Exodus). The people will also be disciplined and brought back to the LORD. All this language identifies the Egyptians with the people of God.

“Highway” is a connecting image (travel, communication). In Is. 19:23, it connects bitter enemies together through Israel where unity is found in worshipping the LORD together. Israel becomes a center point for blessings flowing out to the nations (Gen. 12:1-3).
When was, is, or will this prophecy be fulfilled?
o Begins fulfillment in Acts 2:9-10, where Jews are gathered in to hear the gospel from Mesopotamia (region where Assyria was) and Egypt. These would eventually go home and proclaim the gospel there.
o Ultimately, it will be fulfilled in the end (Rev. 5:9-10).
o It is being fulfilled as people from all over the world in every nation joins the church by God’s grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The good news of Jesus Christ is what saves people and brings them into right worship of the LORD.
o Jesus died and shed his blood to make atonement for our (my) sin (Rev. 5:9-10).
o Jesus died and rose to build a kingdom and priests to God, eventually to reign on the earth.
o God’s Grace must work in our hearts and lives to make us new creations (2 Cor. 5:17; Titus 3:5); we love because God first loved us (1 Jn. 4:10).
o We repent of our sin, turn from it, receive the saving work of Jesus Christ by believing in him. From there, we grow in holiness as God’s power works in us and as we obey. Trust in Jesus.
o If we born again, already saved, then praise God and live thankful lives bearing the fruit of the Spirit (Lk. 17:7-10).
Share the Gospel and Spread it to all Nations (Mt. 28:18-20).
o Truly desire for everyone, even our enemies and other nations, to know the gospel and be saved.
o Begin with prayer – pray for harvesters (evangelists) and pray for people.
o Share the gospel with our neighbors, friends, family, and others as the door opens.
§ Proclaim the gospel.
§ Ask questions that can lead to the gospel or cause the person to question unbiblical beliefs. Know the Bible, study it; read some books that have Biblical answers for common questions.
§ Consider and pray if you or someone you know may be a missionary.
