Friends and Enemies
James 4:4-6
Pastor Jerry Koller
James 4:4-6
Pastor Jerry Koller
Adultery is the sin of violating the marriage covenant by having sexual intimacy with someone or something other than a spouse.
In regard to adultery, Jesus said:
In regard to adultery, Jesus said:
Lust is a passionate yearning or desire for something or someone.
The nation of Israel was God’s chosen people, as far as a specific nation is concerned. When Israel is talked about as a corporate body of people, it is often referred to in the feminine gender.
• Another example is the Body of Christ, which is comprised of all true believers.
• Another example is the Body of Christ, which is comprised of all true believers.
The word friendship in verse 4, comes from the Greek noun philia, from which we get the word Philadelphia. The verb form of this word, phileo, is often translated ‘love.’
“Love” in Greek Understanding:
• The kind of Greek that was common when this letter was written is called Koine Greek.
• It is also known as Hellenistic Greek or Biblical Greek.
• The kind of Greek that was common when this letter was written is called Koine Greek.
• It is also known as Hellenistic Greek or Biblical Greek.
In Koine Greek, there are at least four distinct words for love: agape, philia, eros, and storge.
• Eros - Eros represents a passionate, romantic love, often involving physical attraction and desire.
• Storge – This word is used to describe familial love, particularly the love between family members, such as parents and children.
• Philia - This word denotes love between friends, characterized by affection, loyalty, and shared experiences.
• Agape - This word refers to selfless, unconditional love, often associated with divine love or charity.
Friendship, in verse 4, has to do with a reciprocal relationship.
The use of the word “world” has to do with the system of manas opposed to God’s system.
The word “wishes” has to do with making a definite choice. It is choosing one thing over another.
• As a result of this choice, one ...makes himself an enemy of God.
• The wording is so intense, it reflects the idea that anyone who does not belong to God belongs to the world and anyone who belongs to the world cannot belong to God.
• As a result of this choice, one ...makes himself an enemy of God.
• The wording is so intense, it reflects the idea that anyone who does not belong to God belongs to the world and anyone who belongs to the world cannot belong to God.
After James addresses the issue of having a friendship with the world, he goes on to say:
Keep in mind the flow of what James is talking about. He is discussing fidelity to God.
As we entered into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, we received the Holy Spirit.
As we entered into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, we received the Holy Spirit.
God—in His holy, perfect, righteous way—jealousy desires our love and affection.
• God's jealousy means that God continually seeks to protect his own honor.
• God's jealousy means that God continually seeks to protect his own honor.
The term “greater grace” is not a reference to a higher level of grace.
It should be understood along the lines of abundance.
APPLICATION
Examine where your love is directed.
Where does your loyalty lie?
God does not want us to have a divided allegiance.
If you find yourselves becoming too cozy with the world, if you see yourselves developing a friendship with the world, confess it, address it, and receive the grace of God to overcome.

Happy Birthday!

Have You Considered?
Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.
Pop Cans = Scholarships
Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
