Today's song is Edelweiss from the Sound of Music. Many believe this song is an Austrian folks tune but it was written from the movie by Rogers and Hammerstein. The song is sung by Capt. Von Trapp at the music festival at the end of the movie.
History
Edelweiss is a flower of the Alps that is strong and resilient. It was an encouragement by Capt. Von Trappe to the people of Austria to stay strong in the midst of the times of their day.
As we prepare to celebrate our 248 Independence on July 4, it begs the question what is the relationship of the Christian to the country. We have dual citizenship, our physical country and our spiritual country.
Context
Our passage from Jeremiah 29 took place at the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BC. The nation was now occupied by Babylon. The temple was destroyed. The best and brightest were shipped back to Babylon. They were wondering how should they live.
The prophet Jeremiah wrote to them and told them to do three things:
1) Settle in the land - marry, build, plant, multiply
2) Seek the welfare of the city
3) Pray for the City.
We have dual citizenship. We are citizens of an earthly kingdom and a heavenly kingdom. Colissians 1 says we have come from a kingdom of darkness. Philippians 3 reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven.
Bottom Line: We should be loyal to the land but led by the Lord!
Application
1) Be Good Citizens. Make where we live better. Be engaged. Care for the vulnerable. Sometimes being a good citizen is standing up against injustice. There are times Therese two kingdoms may be in conflict. Let us choose the heavenly one.
2) Pray - Pray and seek God's best for the city.
