An introduction to the first half of Ezekiel

https://youtu.be/R-CIPu1nko8?si=_7KeRaP2dkTs9hOQ
Ezekiel was one of the first round of people captured and taken to Babylon.

He was the son of a priest and his 30th year was when he would have been installed as a priest in the temple.

He has a bewildering first vision of four animals on wheels that carried a platform that contained the Glory of the Lord

Ezekiel is sent
Ezekiel is shown that the people have replaced God with idols and therefore they will be judged.

The Glory of the Lord left the temple and moves towards Babylon

While Ezekiel promises that the Glory of the Lord will return someday, there is no record of it returning in the Old Testament, even with the second Temple.

In the middle of the sadness, God promises that things will change.
The first half of Ezekiel comes to a head when Ezekiel is told that Jerusalem has fallen.
God declared that those who were meant to lead Israel have failed in their duty
God himself is going to care for his flock
A new shepherd in the line of David will do the job properly
Jesus calls himself the good shepherd
Jesus calls himself the good shepherd
There will be a new covenant of peace that means God's people and the places surrounding God's place will be a blessing.
There will be a New Israel, cleansed by God, with a New heart that resembles the Garden of Eden.
God's spirit is what makes the difference
God promises that we will have one King and a new everlasting covenant and that he will dwell with his people forever.
Ezekiel finishes with the New City of God, with a new Temple, which is not named Jerusalem but:
In Jesus, the glory of God returns to Jerusalem, and God now dwells with his people.
Small Group Questions:

1) Have someone read Ezekiel chapter 34 (perhaps a few people). What verses stand out to you? Why?

2)God tells of Israel's leaders for looking after themselves rather than the sheep. Who are some of the best leaders you have experienced in your life? What made them good?

3)The Spirit seems to be the difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant of Peace in Ezekiel. Have you experienced the Holy Spirit giving you life or speaking to you? Talk about your personal experience of the Holy Spirit.

4)Ezekiel promises we will have a new King and that God would dwell with us. Have someone read Ezekiel 37:24-28 and then someone else read John 1:14-17. What stands out from these two passages to you. What do they tell you about Jesus?

Pray for each other
