The Great Reversal- Week 8- God's Abiding Shalom

The Great Reversal- Week 8- God's Abiding Shalom

The resurrection of Jesus punctuated the final note of the story of God's rescue plan. In breaking into our world, Jesus revealed a better way, one that turns the tables on everything we expected and came to accept as fact. So surprising was this breakthrough that even those who understood the Scriptures best weren't ready for it. The story of Jesus continues to break into our lives and offers us a new and better way. Easter Sunday marks the beginning of our series that shows how Jesus changed everything.

There is still this disconcerting feeling that many have that things are not the way they are supposed to be.
Life has a way of robbing us of our peace.
Billions of dollars and entire lifetimes are spent in a quest for peace.
Our peace is only as strong as the foundation we build our lives upon.
Instead of peace as we've come to understand it, Jesus offers us shalom.
"One can dictate a peace; shalom is a mutual agreement.
Peace is a temporary pact; shalom is a permanent agreement.
One can make a peace treaty; shalom is the condition of peace.
Peace can be negative, the absence of commotion. Shalom is positive, the presence of serenity.
Peace can be partial; shalom is whole.
Peace can be piecemeal; shalom is complete."
- Rabbi Robert Kahn
Shalom is what God ultimately desires for humanity.
What makes shalom complete is not in what is absent, but what is present.
In the Garden,
Emmanuel brought peace.
A common thread throughout the Scriptures is the story of God’s efforts to give his people shalom.
The presence of God brings a wave of peace in the midst of the chaos.
For Jesus, the foundation of the peace he offers is too, not in the absence of conflict or pain or turmoil, but in God’s presence through it.
It is the presence of God, first through Jesus and then through the Holy Spirit, that gives shalom to his followers.
The Holy Spirit is the abiding presence of God that offers us abiding Shalom.
The promise of God is consistent from beginning to end: that peace comes, not from the absence of conflict, but in the presence of God in our lives.
Now, nothing can separate us from the love of God or the presence of God.
Because of the person of the
Holy Spirit, God’s presence is always with us- every one of us, and that presence gives us peace.
The streams of living water is the enduring shalom of God brought by the enduring presence of God.
