MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES
We will be collecting back packs over the next few weeks to donate to Dover Elementary School / please place in the bucket in the upper foyer (we will not be filling the backpacks this year)

Dover School District is in need of 'packers' for their weekend food program. This would require 4 volunteers to go to New Hope in Dillsburg periodically on Thursdays to pack food baggies that will be distributed to all Dover elementary schools for students who qualify for weekend food bags. This is an awesome opportunity to help bless children who would otherwise go hungry over the weekends during the school year. Please sign up on the list in the lower foyer if you can help with this project.

GAITHER CONCERT
We would like to purchase tickets to see the Gaither’s on Saturday, September 29, 6:00 p.m. at Christian Life Assembly. The tickets are $20 per person if we can get 10 people to sign up. If you would like to attend, please sign up in the upper foyer. This is time sensitive and we will need to know soon. We will take the church van for those who would like to ride in the van. Space is limited to 15 so sign up soon!

We are going to jump right back in to our study on the book of Acts, or as we have said, the Acts of the Holy Spirit.

We left off having the apostles chose 7 men full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom to help them carry out all the necessary details of running a ministry.
If we truly want to see our friends and family and our neighbors come to know Christ, then we all need to be a part of what God is doing in our church. Because it will not work otherwise.
You don’t need to be up front or in a place of prominence for God to use you. Maybe God wants to perform miracles in your work place, in your school, or in your home.

Just because you think you aren’t doing anything special (like working in a food bank) doesn’t mean God can’t work through you where you are.

Stephen was passing out food to widows and God did the miraculous.
One of the reasons we modified our quote from “Come expecting” to “Live expecting” is that we don’t need to be in this building for God to do the miraculous.

God will do miraculous things when His people come together, and He fills us and energizes us when we meet, but He is not limited to that.
Jews in Jerusalem had divided themselves into their own little ethnic groups and even had their own neighborhood synagogues.

And it seems that Stephen was beginning to irritate all of them.

It doesn’t tell us what exactly he was preaching but we can assume that it was the salvation by grace apart from the law. That is what Jesus preached and we guess that is what Stephen was doing.

And he got the same result that Jesus got.
If we take a stand for what we believe, we will always face opposition and those who want to argue and debate with us.
If they can’t refute WHAT you say they attack the person saying it.

Notice what they were attacking.
They first said he was against Moses. His preaching was challenging the eternal validity of the Mosaic Law. Jews believed that they law was eternal, never to change.

God would always work within the parameters of the law he gave as they perceived it.

Jesus wasn’t changing it, but he was fulfilling it. In effect becoming the fulfillment of the law. Something they couldn’t or wouldn’t understand.

Then they said he was against God because of Jesus’s statement about destroying the temple and rebuilding it in 3 days.

Jesus was talking about himself as the temple, not the building.
Stephen appeared to be putting aside the foundation and their focus of worship-the temple. The temple was no longer necessary.

It’s hard for anyone to hear that what they have lived and believed all their lives is now obsolete and no longer relevant.

That is where God “lived” and where people came to worship. Now he was saying the WE are the temple, where God resides, not the building. . .

So he was shaking the foundation of everything they believed.
They were not attacking the miraculous things happening because they couldn’t deny those, so they needed to create a scenario in which people would agree with the Jews.

They were creating a lie around which they would feel justified in taking the extreme action they wanted.
If you can create a lie that people will believe, it will give them the justification to commit the most horrific acts.
~ Nazis believed they were doing the right thing because of a lie they were told.
~ Blacks were treated as slaves because of a lie that was told and believed.
~ Stalin, Mao, Lenin, Romanian leader- Ceaucescu,
~ North Korea, China, every totalitarian government operates because people believe lies.
Let’s get closer to home...we kill millions of babies a year because of a lie.

That’s just a tissue mass.
Even when faced with imminent persecution and opposition, Stephen still had a countenance about him that people noticed.

Stephen’s reaction was the direct result of being filled with the Holy Spirit and wisdom.

Whether it’s persecution, hardship, garden variety trials, illnesses, money issues, how do we respond to each of them?

Do we want to be sure of a Christ-like response? Then keep being filled with the Holy Spirit & wisdom.
He was being given an opportunity to respond.

He doesn’t recant, he doesn’t walk back his comments, he gives a reader’s digest version of the Jewish people, beginning with Abraham going through the prophets up to the end of the Old Testament.

It wasn’t really a defense, or even him trying to get out of it.

He knew that this was his opportunity to preach to them. And he did it like an Old Testament prophet.
If these phrases sound familiar, they are. When the Israelites built the golden calf and God rebuked them for it...
So when Stephen uses these terms, he knows exactly what they mean and so do those to whom he is speaking.
He was saying that they are no different than all the others in the Old Testament that disobeyed God.

It's likely that no matter what he would have said, the outcome would probably have been the same.

Jesus said nothing and they still killed him.
Sometimes no matter how much we try to water down what Jesus says so it may be more easy to hear, the results will never be what we want them to be so we need to just stand for truth, regardless of what may happen. Unapologetically!

And we have to be ready for the results.
The more we speak the truth, the more difficult the opposition will be.

But God will empower you with all you need to be successful in His eyes.

Do you think Stephen would be considered successful today? He preached maybe his first sermon, nobody got saved and they killed him.
Who was more successful? Stephen or Paul? Perhaps it was Stephen’s witness that helped Saul/Paul accept the gospel?

You may labor in God’s church in a way that nobody realizes, but you don’t know what effect you may have on someone that takes them to great heights.
